The Union government has appointed Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff, placing a veteran commander with extensive operational experience at the country’s top military post. He will assume office on June 1 and succeed General Anil Chauhan after the latter completes his tenure.

The appointment marks another key transition in India’s higher defence leadership at a time when the armed forces continue to focus on border preparedness, military modernisation and joint theatre planning.

Lt Gen Subramani most recently served as military advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat after retiring as the 47th Vice Chief of Army Staff in July 2025. Officials in defence circles describe him as a field commander with deep experience across both operational and strategic assignments.

Born in Mumbai on July 21, 1968, Subramani joined the Indian Army through the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. Since then, he has handled several sensitive postings across conflict-prone regions and difficult terrains.

Over nearly four decades, he served in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and along India’s eastern frontier. During his early years, he commanded the 16th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in Assam under Operation Rhino, where security forces carried out counter-insurgency operations against militant groups.

Later, he took up diplomatic responsibilities as defence attaché at the Indian Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan. He also handled important staff assignments at Army Headquarters and Eastern Command. In Jammu and Kashmir, he served as deputy commander in a Rashtriya Rifles sector and worked closely on counter-terror operations.

Defence officials often point to his understanding of both the northern and eastern borders as one of his strongest advantages. He commanded the II Corps before moving to Udhampur as Chief of Staff of Northern Command in 2022. After that, he led Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.

In July 2024, he became Vice Chief of Army Staff after General Upendra Dwivedi moved to the Army chief’s position.

On the ground, many retired officers and serving personnel view his elevation as a continuity move within the military establishment. Veterans in cantonment areas across northern India described him as a calm strategist with extensive field exposure. Several former officers also recalled his focus on operational readiness and troop coordination during high-pressure assignments.

Apart from military service, Lt Gen Subramani also built a strong academic profile. He studied at the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy before pursuing higher education in defence studies. He earned a master’s degree from University of Madras and later completed an MPhil from King’s College London.

Throughout his career, the Army honoured him with several top military awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

His appointment now comes at a crucial stage for India’s defence structure, especially as the CDS role continues to drive coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force under an integrated military framework.
