Preity Zinta, Ricky Ponting hold intense discussion after Punjab Kings defeat
Punjab Kings entered the second half of IPL 2026 as one of the strongest contenders for the playoffs. Now, however, the franchise finds itself under growing pressure after a fifth straight defeat shook its campaign in Dharamsala.
Soon after Mumbai Indians chased down a 200-run target on Thursday night, Punjab co-owner Preity Zinta walked towards head coach Ricky Ponting for a lengthy discussion near the boundary rope at the HPCA Stadium. Cameras captured both figures deep in conversation as players slowly left the field following the six-wicket defeat.
The loss hurt Punjab badly because the team had earlier dominated the points table during the opening phase of the tournament. However, repeated failures in recent matches have pushed the side into a tense playoff battle.
Punjab now holds 13 points from 12 matches. Meanwhile, defending champions Chennai Super Kings continue to close the gap with 12 points from 11 games. As a result, Punjab can no longer afford mistakes in the final stage of the league season.
Inside the stadium, disappointment spread quickly after the result. Punjab supporters who had filled the Dharamsala stands earlier with drums and chants slowly walked out in silence. Several fans stopped near exits discussing the team’s collapse despite posting a strong total on the scoreboard.
Punjab appeared in control for large parts of the evening after crossing 200 runs. Yet the bowling attack failed once again during the death overs. Head coach Ponting showed visible frustration during Mumbai’s chase and repeatedly moved near the dugout boundary while discussing field placements with support staff.
The biggest blow came from Tilak Varma, who completely shifted momentum in Mumbai’s favour with a fearless unbeaten 75 off just 33 balls. The left-hander attacked Punjab’s bowlers aggressively and refused to allow pressure to build during the chase.
He also found strong support from Will Jacks, who smashed a quick unbeaten cameo in the closing overs. Together, the pair dismantled Punjab’s bowling plans and silenced the home crowd before the finish.
Tilak finally sealed the victory with a towering six in the final over, ending Mumbai’s chase with confidence and leaving Punjab players visibly stunned on the field.
The defeat raised bigger concerns because Mumbai entered the contest without key names like Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. Despite those absences, Mumbai still outplayed Punjab under pressure.
Earlier this season, Punjab earned praise for aggressive batting and improved team balance under Ponting’s leadership. The side looked calmer, more organised and tactically sharper than previous years. However, the recent losing streak has exposed weaknesses in bowling execution and match control during crucial moments.
Now the playoff race grows tighter with every passing game. Chennai continues to build momentum, while other mid-table teams also remain in contention. Punjab therefore enters its remaining fixtures with little room for error.
For Zinta and Ponting, the conversation in Dharamsala reflected more than frustration from one defeat. It reflected the fear of watching a promising season slowly slip away just weeks before the playoffs.
