Mukesh Singh takes charge as Manipur DGP amid security challenges
Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh will now lead the police force in Manipur. The Centre cleared his appointment as Director General of Police for a three-year term. Authorities released the official order soon after the decision.
Singh belongs to the 1996 batch of the AGMUT cadre. At present, he serves as the DGP of Ladakh. However, the government has now shifted him to Manipur at a crucial time for the northeastern state.
His appointment comes as Manipur continues to face security and law-and-order concerns in several districts. Over the past months, security forces increased patrols and strengthened monitoring in sensitive regions. Local residents in parts of Imphal and nearby hill areas have also demanded faster action against violence and unrest.
Officials expect Singh to focus on coordination between central and state security agencies. Many officers believe his experience in sensitive regions could help improve ground-level policing in Manipur. Security experts also point toward his background in handling complex administrative situations.
Meanwhile, people on the ground continue to hope for stability and normal movement in affected areas. Small businesses in several local markets have struggled due to uncertainty and periodic disruptions. Students and daily wage workers have also faced difficulties during tense periods.
The leadership change has now sparked fresh discussions within administrative circles. Political observers say the government wants a stronger security structure before upcoming administrative and developmental plans move forward in the state.
Manipur has remained under national focus due to ethnic tensions and repeated clashes in recent years. Both state and central agencies continue efforts to restore confidence among communities. Against this backdrop, Mukesh Singh’s entry as the new police chief carries significant responsibility.
