Iyer fined as slow over-rate clouds Punjab Kings’ winning start in IPL 2026
Chandigarh – Shreyas Iyer landed in trouble despite leading Punjab Kings to victory. The BCCI fined him ₹12 lakh for a slow over-rate. With this, he became the first captain to face a penalty in IPL 2026.
Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by three wickets. However, the win came with a warning sign. Officials found the team short on the required over-rate during the match. As a result, the IPL governing body imposed the fine under its code of conduct.
According to officials, this marked the first offence for Punjab Kings this season. Therefore, authorities limited the punishment to a monetary fine. However, repeated violations could invite stricter action in the coming matches.
From a ground perspective, the match delivered high drama. Punjab started strong while chasing 162. Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly built momentum with a 77-run stand. At that stage, Punjab looked in complete control.
However, the game turned quickly. Shubman Gill made a bold move. He introduced Prasidh Krishna late as an impact player. The decision paid off instantly. Krishna ripped through the middle order and picked up three wickets in quick succession. Consequently, Punjab slipped from 110/2 to 118/6 and faced a sudden collapse.
Even then, Punjab refused to panic. Connolly showed maturity beyond his years. He stitched small partnerships and kept the scoreboard moving. He stayed unbeaten on 72 and guided the team home. Xavier Bartlett supported him calmly at the other end. Together, they secured two crucial points for Punjab.
Earlier, Gujarat set a competitive total. Gill led from the front and played aggressive shots in the powerplay. He and Sai Sudharsan gave the team a quick start. However, Punjab bowlers pulled things back soon after.
Marco Jansen broke the opening stand and applied pressure. Then, Yuzvendra Chahal tightened control in the middle overs. He removed key batters, including Gill and Jos Buttler. As a result, Gujarat lost momentum despite a promising start.
In the death overs, Punjab bowlers stayed disciplined. Gujarat managed only a modest finish and ended with 162. That total looked defendable at one stage. However, Connolly’s composure turned the game.
In the background, slow over-rate offences have remained a recurring issue in the IPL. Captains often face fines for delays caused by long bowling changes and on-field discussions. Notably, Iyer had faced similar penalties last season as well. Therefore, this latest fine puts him under early scrutiny.
Going forward, Punjab Kings will aim to maintain both performance and discipline. While they celebrated a hard-fought win, the penalty served as a reminder. In a tightly contested league like Indian Premier League, even small lapses can carry consequences.
