Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday celebrated the BJP’s massive victory in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal and described the outcome as a triumph of democracy over fear and intimidation. The result delivered a major political setback to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress in a constituency that had remained under its control for more than a decade.

BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a landslide victory with over 1.49 lakh votes. He defeated CPI(M) nominee Sambhu Nath Kurmi by more than one lakh votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla finished third, while TMC candidate Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth position and lost his deposit.

The scale of the BJP’s victory surprised many political observers because Falta falls within the politically sensitive Diamond Harbour region, an area where the TMC traditionally maintained strong influence. In the 2021 Assembly election, the party won the seat comfortably with a dominant vote share. This time, however, the electoral picture changed dramatically.

The repoll took place after the Election Commission ordered fresh voting across all booths following complaints during the earlier polling process. Political parties raised concerns over alleged irregularities involving electronic voting machines and voter marking procedures. As a result, authorities increased security deployment across the constituency during the repoll to avoid tension and ensure smoother voting.

On the ground, many residents noticed a quieter campaign atmosphere from the TMC during the second round of polling. Several local party offices remained inactive, while BJP workers continued door-to-door outreach until the final day of campaigning. Voters in market areas and residential pockets said they witnessed a stronger turnout among first-time voters and women during the repoll.

After the results, Modi thanked voters and BJP workers in West Bengal. In a message on social media, he said people had delivered a clear response through the ballot box. He also linked the verdict to growing public support for the BJP’s political approach in the state.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also reacted strongly to the outcome. He claimed the result reflected public anger against the ruling party and argued that voters finally exercised their choice without pressure. Adhikari further described the verdict as the beginning of a larger political shift in West Bengal ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, BJP supporters gathered outside counting centres and party offices after the announcement. Workers celebrated with drums, flags and victory marches in several parts of Falta. Local residents also discussed the sharp fall in TMC’s vote share, which dropped drastically compared to previous elections.

Political analysts believe the result may influence upcoming electoral strategies in Bengal, especially in constituencies where the BJP seeks to expand its base. The victory also gives the party fresh momentum in a state where political rivalry between the BJP and TMC continues to intensify.

After his win, Panda thanked voters and said people wanted a fair and transparent election process. He added that the large margin reflected public confidence in the BJP’s campaign and leadership.

The Falta repoll now stands out as one of the most closely watched political contests in West Bengal this year, not only because of the scale of victory but also because of the message it sends ahead of future electoral battles in the state.
