West Bengal – Drums beat outside counting centres in Kolkata. Then, party workers waved flags and shouted slogans as leads turned into wins. As a result, a political shift took shape across West Bengal. Now, the focus moves to one question—who will lead the state as chief minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landmark victory.

At the centre of this discussion stands Suvendu Adhikari. He defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, her home turf. Soon after, party insiders placed him ahead in the leadership race. Moreover, his recent victories added weight to his claim. He had earlier defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021. This time, he widened the margin and reinforced his position as a key face of the party in Bengal.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders also weigh other options. Samik Bhattacharya, the state unit chief, remains in contention. At the same time, Agnimitra Paul, who won from Asansol Dakshin, has emerged as another strong candidate. Therefore, the final call depends on internal discussions and central leadership strategy.

Numbers That Changed the Game

Then came the results that reshaped Bengal politics. The BJP won 206 of 293 seats. In contrast, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured 81 seats. Consequently, the scale of victory gave BJP a clear mandate to form the government for the first time in the state.

On the ground, voters described a desire for change. A shopkeeper in Howrah said he voted for “development and stability.” Similarly, a first-time voter in Malda pointed to employment concerns and said he wanted “new leadership.” These sentiments echoed across districts and boosted BJP’s outreach.

Adhikari’s Campaign and Edge

Earlier, Adhikari switched from TMC to BJP in 2020. Since then, he built a sharp campaign against his former party. He travelled across districts, addressed rallies, and targeted the state government on governance and corruption. As the campaign intensified, he framed the election as a direct contest with Banerjee.

In addition, senior leaders backed him publicly. Amit Shah accompanied him during his Bhabanipur nomination. This move signalled strong support from the top. Consequently, party workers rallied behind Adhikari as the primary face of the campaign.

He also pushed a focused voter strategy. He spoke about consolidating support among key demographics and expanding the party’s base. As a result, BJP improved its performance even in districts with complex electoral equations like Murshidabad and Birbhum.

Other Contenders and Strategic Balance

However, the party has not closed the door on other names. Bhattacharya brings organisational experience and led the state unit during this breakthrough election. On the other hand, Paul offers a fresh face and could help the party project gender balance if it opts for a woman chief minister.

Therefore, BJP may weigh political messaging along with electoral performance. The final decision could reflect both governance priorities and long-term strategy in Bengal.

Next, BJP plans a meeting of newly elected legislators in Kolkata. After that, the party will appoint an observer to oversee the selection of the legislative leader. Once MLAs choose their leader, the government formation process will begin.

For now, celebrations continue on the streets. Yet, expectations rise just as quickly. Voters now look for action on jobs, infrastructure, and law and order. As a result, the next chief minister will face immediate pressure to deliver.

BJP has secured the numbers. Now, it must choose the face that can convert this victory into stable governance.
