A young woman from Noida moved to Bhopal after finding love through a dating app. Less than six months after her wedding, her death has now triggered a major police investigation, street protests and allegations of dowry harassment against her husband’s family.

Police found the 31-year-old hanging inside her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Soon after, her family accused her husband and mother-in-law of mental and physical abuse. They also alleged murder and demanded an independent investigation.

According to investigators, the woman met a Bhopal-based lawyer through a dating platform in 2024. Their friendship later turned into a relationship, and both families agreed to the marriage in December 2025. After the wedding, she shifted from Noida to Bhopal and started living with her husband and in-laws in the Bagh Mugalia Extension area.

Neighbours in the locality described the couple as “quiet” but said arguments often erupted inside the house. Some residents claimed they had heard loud disputes in recent weeks, although nobody reported the matter to police earlier.

Meanwhile, the woman’s relatives painted a troubling picture of her married life. Family members said she frequently expressed discomfort after moving to Bhopal and wanted to return to Noida. According to them, she stayed in touch regularly and often discussed stress at home.

Her father claimed she spoke to him shortly before the incident and complained about harassment. He also alleged that her husband assaulted her multiple times during the marriage. The family further claimed they noticed injury marks on her body after the death, which raised suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the case.

Initially, police began inquiries from the angle of suicide. However, the allegations from the family pushed investigators to widen the probe. Authorities later registered a case under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to dowry death.

Police also formed a Special Investigation Team to examine claims of dowry harassment, assault and possible destruction of evidence. Rajneesh Kashyap, who leads the SIT probe, said investigators would verify every allegation linked to the woman’s death.

At the same time, police intensified efforts to locate and question the husband. Court proceedings also gathered pace after the victim’s father-in-law, a retired judge, secured interim bail from a Bhopal district court.

The case quickly drew public attention across Madhya Pradesh. On Sunday, the woman’s relatives staged a protest outside the residence of Mohan Yadav in Bhopal. Protesters demanded a second post-mortem examination at Delhi’s AIIMS and questioned the handling of forensic procedures during the first examination.

Family members alleged that crucial evidence never reached forensic experts. They also claimed the woman’s body remained inside the mortuary for several days, which added to their distress and anger.

Outside the chief minister’s residence, emotions ran high as relatives raised slogans and demanded justice. Several women protesters held placards calling for stricter action in dowry-related crimes. Passersby stopped briefly to watch the demonstration, while police personnel maintained barricades around the protest site.

Later, the victim’s father and brother said officials from the chief minister’s office assured them that authorities would ensure a fair investigation. However, the family continues to seek the transfer of legal proceedings outside Madhya Pradesh, arguing that the accused family holds influence in legal circles within the state.

The husband’s anticipatory bail plea now comes up for hearing on Monday. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine phone records, forensic findings and statements from relatives as the case moves deeper into scrutiny.
