BCCI imposes heavy fines on CSK players after second over-rate offence of season

Chennai Super Kings signed off from IPL 2026 with another setback after a crushing defeat against the Gujarat Titans triggered fresh penalties from the league authorities. The loss not only ended Chennai’s playoff hopes but also brought financial punishment for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the rest of the squad over a repeated slow over-rate offence.

The IPL governing body fined Gaikwad ₹24 lakh after Chennai failed to complete their overs within the required time during the match in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, every member of the playing eleven, along with the impact substitute, also faced financial penalties under the league’s code of conduct.

This marked Chennai’s second over-rate violation of the season. Earlier, the franchise committed a similar breach during a match against the Delhi Capitals in April. However, at that stage, Chennai still remained in the playoff race. This time, the punishment arrived alongside elimination.

At the Narendra Modi Stadium, Gujarat completely outplayed Chennai in all departments. Gujarat posted a massive total above 220 after dominating the bowling attack through aggressive batting and quick scoring in the middle overs.

In reply, Chennai collapsed under pressure almost immediately. Wickets fell rapidly as the chase lost momentum inside the powerplay itself. Apart from Shivam Dube, who played a brief attacking knock, no Chennai batter managed to build resistance. The innings folded early, handing Gujarat a huge victory margin.

The defeat summed up Chennai’s difficult season. The five-time champions struggled for consistency throughout the campaign and failed to build momentum during crucial stages of the tournament. Injuries, bowling concerns and unstable combinations repeatedly hurt the side.
