Bihar enters a political transition. Nitish Kumar steps down and shifts focus to the Rajya Sabha. Soon after, Samrat Choudhary prepares to take oath as Chief Minister. With this move, the Bharatiya Janata Party secures its first CM in the state.

Next, Choudhary’s rise reflects a calculated journey. He begins his career with the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Then, he shifts to the Janata Dal (United). Finally, he joins the BJP and adapts quickly. In 2023, the party appoints him as Bihar unit chief. At that time, Nitish aligns with the opposition bloc, which puts BJP on the back foot. Choudhary steps in and rebuilds the organisation’s ground presence.

Meanwhile, he sharpens his political messaging. As Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, he targets Nitish’s alliance with RJD. However, he soon recalibrates his tone. By early 2024, he senses a possible shift. He follows signals from the central leadership and reduces direct attacks. This move helps him stay aligned with the party’s long-term strategy.

Then, the equation changes. JD(U) returns to the NDA fold in January 2024. Choudhary takes charge as Deputy CM and handles the finance portfolio. He works closely with Nitish but avoids overt competition. Instead, he maintains a balanced approach. Over time, he builds trust with the senior leader.

At the ground level, caste dynamics play a key role. Nitish relies on the Kurmi-Koeri or “Luv-Kush” equation. Choudhary, who belongs to the Kushwaha community, fits naturally into this framework. This alignment strengthens his acceptability across both BJP and JD(U) ranks. It also gives the alliance a broader social base against Lalu Prasad Yadav and his support base.

Further, Choudhary shows patience. From 2024 to the 2025 Assembly elections, he avoids aggressive positioning. Instead, he credits both Narendra Modi and Nitish for governance gains. After NDA returns to power in 2025, his stature grows. Notably, he receives the home portfolio, a role Nitish usually keeps.

At the same time, BJP weighs its options. Leaders like Vijay Kumar Sinha, Nityanand Rai, and Sanjay Jaiswal enter discussions. Yet, Choudhary emerges as the consensus pick. His chemistry with Nitish and his caste positioning give him an edge.

Finally, the strategy becomes clear. BJP avoids risks linked to caste imbalance. It backs a leader who maintains alliance harmony and expands voter appeal. With Nitish’s nod and party approval, Choudhary secures the top post. His steady approach, political timing, and social fit now place him at the helm of Bihar’s next chapter.
