Delhi Police have intensified security across Israeli and Jewish establishments after intelligence agencies warned of possible terror threats during the ongoing Hanukkah festival, which runs from December 14 to 21. Authorities acted swiftly following the December 14 terror attack in Sydney, Australia, where gunmen killed 15 people at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach.

Investigators identified the Sydney attackers as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24. The incident has triggered global concerns about potential coordinated attacks against Jewish communities, including in India. Intelligence inputs indicate that groups such as Shia militias, Islamic State (IS), Al-Qaeda, and regional affiliates could target Israeli and Jewish interests worldwide.

Delhi Police’s Special Cell directed all 15 district units, along with Delhi Metro and Railway Police, to immediately review security at sensitive locations. Officials specifically flagged the Israeli embassy, consular offices, synagogues, Jewish community centres, Chabad houses, and tourist spots frequented by Israeli nationals. Police have emphasized extra vigilance during religious events, large gatherings, and near critical premises.

Senior police officers confirmed that authorities hold periodic security reviews and coordination meetings at the district level to ensure readiness. Patrol frequency has increased, and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) are on standby for rapid deployment. Hotels, restaurants, and business establishments linked to Israeli interests in Delhi now have enhanced security measures, including additional personnel at vulnerable points.

Authorities also instructed field units to maintain continuous surveillance of large crowds and monitor any suspicious activity. They emphasized that intelligence inputs require proactive intervention to prevent any potential incidents. “We have increased patrolling and made extra deployments at sensitive points. Coordination among units ensures swift response if needed,” the officer added.

Beyond Delhi, other major metropolitan areas hosting significant Israeli tourist and business activity, such as Mumbai and Goa, are also under heightened alert. Local police units have intensified security at community centres, synagogues, and tourist hotspots. Officials confirmed that they continue to track any suspicious movement and have briefed local authorities and private security teams to remain vigilant.

The intelligence alert underscores the global reach of potential terrorist networks and the heightened risk during international religious festivals. Authorities in Delhi and other cities are acting to mitigate threats while ensuring normal public activity continues with minimal disruption. Security officials emphasize that citizens should report any unusual activity and cooperate with police, especially near sensitive locations.

In summary, Delhi Police have adopted a multi-layered approach, combining increased patrolling, rapid response readiness, and close coordination among district units, Metro, and Railway police to protect Israeli and Jewish sites. Authorities maintain that they are closely monitoring developments and will adapt security measures as necessary during the Hanukkah festival.
