New Delhi: The World Heart Federation reported that India lost over 28.7 lakh people to cardiovascular diseases in 2021, with heart attacks causing one-third of all deaths between 2021 and 2023. As heart ailments rise rapidly, experts urge people to make small lifestyle changes to protect their hearts.

Dr. Arora, a senior diabetologist and physician in Dwarka, shared one simple yet powerful method to lower the risk of heart attacks — a 10 to 15-minute walk after meals.

He said, “Walking after meals reduces heart attack risk by 40%. If it were a medicine, I would prescribe it to every patient.” The doctor added that walking benefits those suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, and heart risks. Yet, he regretted that very few people follow this simple advice.

Why Walking Works

Dr. Arora explained that walking after meals brings multiple health benefits. It controls blood sugar, reduces triglycerides, aids digestion, protects arteries, and improves brain function.

“Whenever you eat, take a short walk,” he advised. “Food spikes blood sugar levels. High insulin causes inflammation and oxidative stress, which damage arteries. Walking prevents these spikes and keeps arteries healthy.”

He added that oxidative stress acts like “rust” on arteries, making them weak and prone to blockages. Regular post-meal walks can stop this process and protect the heart from long-term damage.

Lowers Triglycerides and Cleans Blood

Walking also reduces triglycerides, a harmful form of fat in the blood. “Triglycerides form plaque in the arteries, causing heart attacks and strokes,” Dr. Arora said. “Walking helps clear these particles from the blood, purifying it naturally.”

Boosts Nitric Oxide and Blood Flow

The doctor further explained that walking after eating increases nitric oxide levels in the blood. “Nitric oxide widens arteries and improves blood flow,” he said. “As a result, blood pressure drops, and stress on artery walls reduces.”

He added that this natural process enhances heart health and prevents artery thickening, a major cause of heart blockages.

Fights Brain Fog and Fatigue

Dr. Arora also linked post-meal walks to better brain health. “Many people feel sleepy or dull after eating due to sugar and insulin spikes. Walking stabilizes these levels and clears brain fog,” he explained.

This simple habit, he noted, helps improve focus, energy, and alertness after meals.

A 15-Minute Rule for a Healthy Heart

In conclusion, Dr. Arora urged everyone to follow the “15-minute walk rule” — walk after breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. “This small effort strengthens the heart, improves digestion, lowers BP, and sharpens the brain,” he said.

As heart disease continues to claim millions of lives in India, experts like Dr. Arora emphasize that prevention starts with daily habits. A few mindful steps after each meal could be the simplest path to a healthier heart and a longer life.
