Medical services in Govt hospitals remain crumbled for two days in Bengal
Kolklata, June 12 (HS): Medical services in all government hospitals across West Bengal continued to remain in tatters for the second day today as junior doctors and interns in all these hospitals in the city and elsewhere in the state continued their strike demanding full protection for them from attacks by relatives of patients and others.
As a result of their strike which was described as ‘symbolic’ and ‘only a for a few hours’ to express  solidarity with their beaten up colleagues at Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital by the patients relatives, the treatment of patients in all departments, particularly in outdoor sections, have come to a halt since this noon, bringing untold miseries and harassment to thousands of patients and their relatives across the state.
Even serious heart and cancer patients were being refused to be admitted or even seen by the agitating doctors causing serious concern among the patients relatives across the state.
As a result the initial sympathy towards the agitating doctors, has now  gradually been turning into frustration and anger in different government hospitals from where reports of further assaults and heckle of doctors have started pouring in with police in most of the cases remaining muke spectators and taking no action against  such attacks.
It may be recalled that two Junior doctors were  injured and admitted to hospital yesterday after they were attacked by the patients relatives at NRS hospital. Later one of them – Paribaha Mukherjee – who sustained multiple injuries in his head was shifted to the ICCU department as his condition deteriorated further and required immediate surgery.
As the news of attacks on junior doctors at NRS hospital spread, their colleagues in all other government hospitals in the city and in almost every district, stopped their work to express their solidarity with the injured and beaten doctors.
‘We demand adequate and full protection from hooligans and the patients’ relatives who frequent every hospital now and then, and in the name of inadequate treatment beat up doctors mercilessly, a spokesperson of the Junior Doctors Association told Hindusthan Samachar.
Demanding immediate intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee into the issue and take necessary steps to ensure total safety and security of doctors and the nursing staff in every hospital, the agitating doctors have decided to continue their seize work till their demands are met.
Meanwhile, state BJP President Dilip Ghosh while urging the striking doctors to return to work immediately keeping in mind the untold sufferings of thousands of poor and hapless patients, also blamed the government for allegedly failing to handle the situation in proper perspective and ensuring full protection to the medical community of the state from frequent hooliganism inside the hospitals.
‘We consider that though the Doctors’ service is a must, their safety and security should come first,’ he said.
