Baghjan gas leak: PIL filed in Guwahati High Court

Guwahati, June 11 (HS) Nature activist Nirant Gosai filed a PIL in the Guwahati High Court on Wednesday into Baghjan oil well fire and blast. The PIL demanded the court to conduct a high-level inquiry into the matter.

Baghjan oil well in Tinsukia district has been spewing gas uncontrollably for the last two weeks since May 27. It was engulfed in massive flames on June 9, endangering the local bio diversity which was already ravaged following the major blast that on May 27. Thousands of people have been moved out of the area. Two fire fighters died in the accident.

Gosai, in collaboration with advocate Shantanu Barthakur, filed a PIL, stating that the biodiversity of the area had been hugely damaged. All the living beings have the right to live, so a high-level inquiry committee should be set up urgently in this matter in order to provide justice to all, the PIL said.
