Locality names in TN to be in tune with Tamil pronunciation

Tamil Nadu: Chennai, June 11 (HS) Tamil Nadu government has taken steps to ensure that English names of various places in the State match their exact Tamil pronunciation.
It brought out a notification on June 10, keeping in view the recommendations made by experts to bring a change in the names of 1018 locations across the state.
District collectors are to take steps towards changing the names of the places with help of local bodies concerned.
Some of the places whose English names were changed include: Siruvallur – Siruvalloor, Koyembedu – Koyambedu, Mylapore – Mayilaappoor, Guindy Park – Gindi Poongaa, Thiyagaraya Nagar – Thiyaagaraaya Nagar .
Many of the localities whose names were changed are quite popular places. For example, Thiyagaraya Nagar is known as T. Nagar. It is one of the shopping hubs in the metropolis.
Mylapore is known for religious shrines. This locality houses the popular Shiva Temple ‘Kapaleeswarar Temple.’ It is also known for ‘Church of Our Lady of Light’  and is commonly known as Luz Church.
The change in the existing names may be a delight, but the popular places will continue to be known in their old names for many years.
