Covid-19 claims DMK MLA’s life in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, June 10 (HS) J Anbazhagan, the 62 year old MLA of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu succumbed to Covid -19 in Chennai on Wednesday.
Anbzhagan who died on his 62nd birthday, was said to be the first big political leader who succumbed to the visrus in Tamil Nadu.
The MLA from Triplicane was earlier admitted to Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre at Chromepet in Chennai on June 2. He was put on ventilator and was fighting severe respiratory distress for the last two days.
Statement by the hospital said ‘Anbazhagan had been fighting for his life with severe COVID-19 pneumonia rapidly detoriorated early this morning.’
A statement in this regard said the MLA was declared dead at 8:05 hours on Wednesday.
Anbazhagan was a three time MLA and was actively involved in Ondrinaivom Vaa initiative floated by the DMK party in Tamil Nadu. Under the initiative relief materials were distributed to the needy during the recent lockdown.
J Anbzhagan was elected to Tamil Nadu assembly in 2001, 2011 and 2016. He was known as a die hard party loyalist. His father Pazhakadai Jayaraman was also a DMK strongman from T. Nagar. Raja, son of Anbzhagan, works in the party’s youth wing.
President of DMK MK Stalin paid rich tributes to the MLA. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also condoled the death of Anbazhagan.
