Covid 19 death toll in Bengal jumps to 113 with 14 more deaths in one day
Kolkata,11 May(HS): As altogether 14 more people including a renowned city-based Historian, lost their lives in West Bengal during the last 24 hours in Covid-19 to take the overall death toll to 113 till last evening from 99, a record number of 153 other people also tested positive of the same disease in the state taking their total number to 1939 so far.
Among the deceased were well-known Historian and Researcher Hari Vasudevan (68) who died in a city private hospital yesterday after testing positive of Covid-19 a few ago. As a result, a pall of gloom has descended among his numerous students, friends and relatives.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankar among others has expressed condolence at the death of Vasudevan.
A Medical Bulletin issued by the state Health Department informed here last evening that since the number of those who also lost their lives in the state because of various other comorbidities remained stagnant at 72, the total number of deaths since the outbreak of the killer disease has now gone up to 185 (113 plus 72).
Among the 14 deceased, as many as 10 were from Kolkata alone, while the remaining four died in Howrah and North 24 Parganas districts, the bulletin said.
As a result, the Bulletin said the total number of those affected in Covid -19 in West Bengal till now had now gone up to as high as 1939 from 1739 in one day.
Since yesterday a record number of 94 Corona positive patients were recovered and released from different hospitals before they returned home, the Medical bulletin said adding with them so far a total of 417 people have returned home after fully recovering from the disease.
Moreover, of the total153 additional people tested positive, the highest number of 87 were from different parts of Kolkata, followed by a large number of others from Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Midnapore, Hooghly and Nadia districts, the Medical Bulletin said.
As the maximum number of those affected were from Kolkata, the City police increased the number of Containment zones in the city to prevent further spread of the disease in new areas and took the total number of Containment zones to 518 in the state including as many as 326 in the city alone, with the maximum number of them remaining in North Kolkata.
Referring to the total number of people being treated in different Covid-19 hospitals, the Bulletin said it was to the tune of 1337, while over 4,000 people were still being in government quarantine facilities and another about 5,000 were in Home quarantine so far.
After ramping up the testing efforts of suspected and asymptomatic patients, as many as 3245 sample testing were conducted yesterday taking their total number to 39,762 so far.
Expressing concern at the growing number of Corona positive patients among the Frontline workers including those from the Police Force and other security forces including the BSF and CISF besides the doctors and nurses, the Bulletin said in a sudden surge as many as 4 police personnel tested positive yesterday.
In addition, 12 doctors and 11 nurses in different hospitals in Kolkata, Howrah and in North 24 Parganas also tested positive and were admitted to hospitals. As a result, altogether 42 Medical staff had since been sent to self-quarantine providing yet another massive blow to the overall fight against the killer disease, the bulletin said.
Meanwhile, as many as 8 special trains from different parts of the country carrying over 12,000 stranded migrant workers are expected to arrive in West Bengal by today and tomorrow from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala following requests and requisitions from the state government to the concerned states and to the Railway Ministry in a bid to end the recent controversy in various quarters about the intension of the Centre as well as the state governments about their future.
