New Delhi, March 17 (HS): The Supreme Court has on Tuesday issued notices to the Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh assembly, its principal secretary, Chief Minister Kamal Nath and Governor Lalji Tandon after they all failed to appear before the court at a hearing against a petition filed by BJP for quick floor test in Madhya Pradesh.

Now the Apex court would hear the petition filed by former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at 10:30 AM on Wednesday. After the congress lawyer failed to appear before the court today, Mukul Rohatgi, a senior advocate from BJP side said, “complete travesty of democracy” and accused the congress of deliberately not appearing.

Justice DY Chandrachud observed that the “rationale of the judgement is that a floor test is required”, but said the court needed to issue notices to the other side.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath faces a difficult battle to save his government in Madhya Pradesh as 22 MLAs, loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia, have submitted their resignations to the congress led government in Madhya Pradesh after Scindia defected to the BJP last week leaving his old congress party.

Of these 22 MLAs, the resignation of six MLAs have already been accepted. The rest 16 MLAs have moved to the Supreme Court against the congress party for not accepting their resignations yet.

Having been weakened by the rebellion within his camp, he got a breather yesterday when the Speaker adjourned assembly proceedings for 10 days, keeping in mind the coronavirus threat. But the BJP soon knocked on the Supreme Court’s doors.
