Opposition divided on CAA issue as BSP, AAP and TMC stayed away from meet.
New Delhi, Jan 13 (HS): The opposition on Monday divided over the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as BSP, AAP and TMC stayed away from the Congress led opposition meet that began here today. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata BanerJee had earlier announced her decision to stay away from the meet.
Similarly, the leaders of the Samajwadi Party and DMK also stayed away from the Congress-led opposition meeting. Shiv Sena, sources said, will also not be part of the opposition meeting to discuss future strategy on CAA.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday registered his protest by asserting that a nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was needless and had no justification. But he also boycott today’s opposition meet to protest CAA.
“Sare desh main NRC laagu karne ki koi zarurat nahi hai aur iska koi auchitya nahi hai, (A nationwide NRC would be needless and has no justification for it),” said Nitish Kumar.
“Prime Minister had also clearly spoken on this issue and we do not think any such thing is going to take place,” asserted the CM.
Congress led opposition today met in parliament to discuss the current political situation following widespread protests against the amended Citizenship Act and the violence on campuses.
The meeting led by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, was attended by leaders of opposition parties including NCP chief Sharad Pawar, LJD’s Sharad Yadav, left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with congress senior leaders Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Rahul Gandhi were also present in the meeting.
