Nirbhaya murder convict shifted to Tihar
New Delhi, Dec 10, (HS): The fourth convict in the Nirbhaya gang rape cum murder case, Pawan Kumar, has been today transferred to Tihar jail. He was earlier lodged in Mandoli jail. The other three convicts in the case are already in Tihar.
Pawan Kumar has been transferred to cell number 2 of Tihar jail along with Akshay and Mukesh Singh. While another convict Vinay Sharma is in cell number 4. All the cells are under CCTV surveillance, said the Tihar offcials. The sources said that all the convicts in the case could be hanged in the cell number 3 of Tihar soon.
Of these Vinay Sharma filed a mercy petition to the President of India to commute death sentence into life imprisonment. Although he later denied of sending any such petition and has also accused jail authorities for conspiring against him of doing so.
The shocking incident of Nirbhaya’s rape cum murder case took place on December 16, 2012 when these people gang raped Nirbhaya (23) in a running private bus in South Delhi area and threw her in critical condition on the road. She was then taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries after a few days of treatment in a hospital situated in Singapore.
The police arrested six persons into this matter out of which four were sentenced to death on September 13, 2013 by a fast track court, while one of the accuse, being juvenile, was sentenced for three years imprisonment and was sent to juvenile home. He was later released in December 2015, after three years of imprisonment.
On March 13, 2014, Delhi High court also refused to extend any relaxation into the death sentence. Further on May 5, 2017 Supreme Court also trashed their petition seeking relaxation in the death sentence. The bus driver Ram Singh, another convict in the case committed suicide in the jail on March 11, 2013.
