Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde becomes 47th Chief Justice, President administered the oath
New Delhi , Nov 18 (HS): Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India on Monday. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ramnath Kovind. Justice Bobde will be the new CJI of the country in place of Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
Justice Bobde comes from a family of eminent lawyers of Maharashtra. Bobde, who was the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in April 2013. Justices Bobde will serve as the CJI of the country till 23 April 2021.
Chief Justice Bobde was the former Advocate General of Maharashtra. Apart from this, his brother was also a senior lawyer. It is noteworthy that Justice Bobde was part of the five-judge special bench of the Supreme Court, which has given a historic verdict on the disputed Ayodhya Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case for years.
Significantly, Justice Gogoi’s tenure in the Supreme Court has been noted. During this time, the court has given the decision on many important cases. Apart from the Ayodhya case, a bench headed by Gogoi decided to refer important questions related to the Sabarimala issue to a larger bench.
