The National Testing Agency on Friday announced June 21 as the new date for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, bringing temporary relief to lakhs of medical aspirants after days of uncertainty and protests over the alleged paper leak controversy.

The fresh announcement came only three days after the agency cancelled the May 3 examination. NTA said it took the decision after investigators flagged serious irregularities linked to the exam process.

NEET-UG remains India’s biggest medical entrance examination and decides admissions to undergraduate medical programmes across the country. Because of that, the cancellation triggered anxiety among students and parents who had already spent months preparing for the highly competitive test.

Outside coaching centres in Kota, Jaipur and Delhi on Friday, many students discussed the revised exam date with mixed emotions. Some welcomed the quick decision because they feared a longer delay could affect admissions and counselling schedules. Others, however, expressed frustration over the emotional stress caused by the controversy.

At a coaching hub in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar, students gathered around mobile phones to check the latest NTA notification. Several aspirants said they had restarted revision plans immediately after the announcement.

In its statement, the NTA urged candidates and parents to follow only official updates and avoid rumours circulating online. Officials also said the government approved the new examination schedule after consultations with authorities.

The controversy began after reports of alleged paper leaks surfaced from Rajasthan soon after the May 3 exam. Initially, the Rajasthan Special Operations Group started the probe. Later, central agencies stepped in as the matter widened.

On Tuesday, the NTA formally cancelled the examination and said findings from investigators raised doubts over the integrity of the process. The agency also recalled that it had already referred the matter to central authorities earlier this month for independent verification.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation intensified its probe into the case. During a hearing in a Delhi court on Thursday, CBI officials claimed the leak traced back to a source inside the NTA network. According to investigators, accused individuals allegedly circulated the question paper through a chain of contacts spread across multiple states.

So far, investigators have arrested several suspects from Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra. The accused currently remain in CBI custody as officers continue questioning and digital evidence analysis.

The controversy has once again sparked debate over the security of national-level examinations in India. Education experts and parents now demand stricter digital monitoring, tighter printing controls and stronger accountability mechanisms for agencies conducting major entrance tests.

Political reactions also intensified during the week. Opposition parties attacked the government over repeated examination controversies, while several student organisations staged demonstrations demanding transparency and punishment for those involved.

Despite the tension, coaching institutes and students now focus on the June 21 examination date. Teachers in Kota and Delhi have already started fresh crash courses and revision sessions. Many aspirants said they now want stability more than anything else after weeks of confusion.

For thousands of students, the next few weeks may decide not only examination scores but also confidence in the country’s competitive testing system.
