EC publishes supplementary voter list ahead of Bengal Poll Phase 1
Kolkata – The election machinery moves into its final phase. Then, clarity arrives for thousands of voters. The Election Commission of India releases a supplementary voter list early Wednesday. This list confirms who can vote in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 on Thursday.
The Commission includes names of voters cleared by Tribunals. These voters faced eligibility disputes earlier. Now, they gain approval after legal review. However, the Commission does not disclose the total number of applicants or approvals. This gap leaves some questions unanswered.
Meanwhile, officials provide a digital route for verification. Voters can check their names on the official website. They must enter their Assembly constituency and booth number. They can also use their EPIC or voter ID number. If a booth still has pending cases, the system does not show names. As a result, some voters still wait for final clarity.
At the ground level, activity picks up across polling areas. In parts of Kolkata and nearby districts, voters line up outside local offices to confirm their status. A first-time voter says she checked her name twice to avoid confusion on polling day. A local polling agent adds that people ask more questions this year due to legal scrutiny. This trend shows both awareness and concern.
At the same time, the Commission publishes two separate lists. One list adds names. The other removes names after Tribunal decisions. This dual update aims to maintain accuracy. Still, the absence of consolidated figures creates debate among political observers.
The move follows clear legal backing. The Supreme Court of India steps in earlier and sets a deadline. It uses its special authority under Article 142 of the Constitution of India to ensure fairness. The court directs authorities to allow all voters cleared up to two days before polling to cast their vote. It also orders the publication of the list by April 21 to avoid last-minute confusion.
Following this directive, the Commission releases the list in the morning. It also plans to issue a final consolidated version by Wednesday evening. This update may bring more clarity before polling begins.
Looking back, voter list disputes have shaped several elections in West Bengal. Political parties often raise concerns about inclusion and exclusion. Therefore, Tribunal intervention plays a key role in resolving such disputes. This year, the legal route gains more attention due to tighter timelines and court involvement.
As polling day approaches, officials focus on smooth execution. Security forces increase presence in sensitive areas. Polling teams prepare booths and equipment. At the same time, voters prepare to exercise their right.
The supplementary list offers relief to many and uncertainty to some. The system moves forward with legal backing and administrative effort. Now, the focus shifts to voter turnout and peaceful polling.
