Tamil Nadu poll buzz: Piyush Goyal to seal seat-sharing as alliances shift and war of words intensifies

Chennai gears up for a crucial political day as Piyush Goyal arrives to finalise seat-sharing for the upcoming assembly elections. The move signals a decisive phase for the Bharatiya Janata Party as it sharpens its electoral strategy in the southern state.

First, BJP’s Tamil Nadu chief Nainar Nagenthran confirmed the visit. He said party leaders will hold key discussions after Goyal’s arrival. He added that the party will soon announce alliance details and its election manifesto. This step comes as political activity intensifies across the state.

At the same time, a sharp exchange continues between the BJP and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Nagenthran targeted Chief Minister M. K. Stalin over his repeated remarks about “Delhi.” He claimed the DMK shows nervousness as BJP expands its presence in Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, Nagenthran dismissed allegations about regional parties acting under central influence. He argued that political meetings can happen anywhere. He insisted that such claims distract from real issues. He also pointed to the Centre’s financial support to Tamil Nadu. According to him, the government has approved projects worth nearly ₹14 lakh crore over the past decade.

He highlighted key infrastructure works to back his claim. These include the expansion of Thoothukudi airport and development at Trichy airport. He said these projects reflect the Centre’s commitment to the state’s growth. Therefore, he urged voters to assess performance based on development outcomes.

Meanwhile, the BJP leader raised concerns about law and order. He flagged the growing drug problem in parts of the state. He cited large seizures of narcotics in recent years. He also referred to a recent violent incident involving a schoolgirl in Vilathikulam. He argued that the state government must focus more on public safety.

In addition, Nagenthran downplayed the rise of a potential “fifth front.” This grouping includes smaller parties and leaders exploring a new alliance. He said democracy allows anyone to form a front. At the same time, the ruling alliance works to manage its own seat-sharing challenges. The DMK has offered five seats to its ally, the Communist Party of India (Marxist). This offer has triggered internal discussions within the Left party.

CPI(M) leaders have held multiple meetings over the past weeks. They initially pushed for a higher number of seats. In the last election, Left parties contested more constituencies. However, the alliance has expanded this time. As a result, seat allocation has become more complex.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin personally joined the negotiations. He urged CPI(M) leaders to accept the offer. He explained the constraints within a larger coalition. He stressed the need to maintain unity within the alliance. His involvement highlights the importance of balancing partners ahead of the polls.

Following this, CPI(M) softened its position slightly. The party indicated that it may not insist on a large increase. However, it still aims to secure at least six seats. Party leaders have scheduled internal meetings to take a final call. They have not ruled out further negotiations.
