Punjab suicide case sparks political storm; ex-minister booked, opposition demands arrest
Amritsar – A sharp political and legal escalation after a senior official’s death triggered serious allegations. Police booked former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, his father, and an aide on charges linked to abetment of suicide. The case has intensified pressure on the state government. At the same time, Opposition parties have stepped up protests and demanded immediate arrest.
First, the sequence began with a tragic incident. A district manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation died after consuming poison at his Amritsar residence. The incident took place on Friday. Soon after, a video surfaced on social media. In the clip, the official claimed he feared Bhullar. This claim added a new dimension to the case.
Next, the police acted on a formal complaint. The official’s wife approached authorities and filed a detailed statement. Based on her complaint, police registered a case at Ranjit Avenue police station. They invoked charges of abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation, and common intention. According to the police, the accused include Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and personal assistant Dilbag Singh.
Meanwhile, the political fallout grew stronger. Bhullar stepped down from his post as transport and jails minister in the Aam Aadmi Party government. He took the decision after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann sought his resignation. Bhullar stated that he wanted to ensure a fair investigation. However, the resignation did little to calm the situation.
From the ground, the allegations paint a disturbing picture. The deceased official’s wife claimed that Bhullar pressured her husband over tenders. She said the tenders related to construction of new godowns. According to her, Bhullar wanted the contracts awarded to his father. She added that her husband resisted the pressure.
Furthermore, she alleged repeated threats. She claimed the accused warned her husband of severe consequences if he refused. She also stated that they threatened harm to the family. These allegations, if proven, point to sustained intimidation over official decisions.
The complaint also described a specific incident. On March 13, Bhullar allegedly called the official to his residence. According to the wife, the accused assaulted him. She claimed they forced him at gunpoint to record a false statement. The statement allegedly linked the tender process to a bribe. This detail has raised serious concerns about coercion and abuse of power.
As the investigation moves forward, political reactions have intensified. Opposition parties united on the issue and launched a joint protest in Chandigarh. Leaders from multiple parties gathered to demand accountability. Among them, Partap Singh Bajwa, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Sunil Jakhar, Bikram Singh Majithia, and Daljit Singh Cheema took part in the demonstration.
Soon after, tensions rose on the ground. Protesters attempted to move towards the Chief Minister’s residence. However, police blocked their path. Authorities deployed a large force near the MLAs’ Hostel. They also placed barricades to stop the march.
Despite restrictions, protesters tried to push forward. In response, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd. The action reflected the intensity of the situation. It also showed how the issue has moved beyond a legal case into a political flashpoint.
Opposition leaders maintained a clear demand. They called for Bhullar’s immediate arrest. They also insisted on a free and transparent investigation. They argued that only strong action can restore public trust. At the same time, they signaled continued protests if authorities delay action.
On the other hand, the state government defended its stance. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reiterated a zero-tolerance policy on corruption. He stated that the law will take its course. He emphasized that the government will not shield anyone. This response aimed to project accountability while allowing the investigation to proceed.
In the background, the case reflects broader concerns about governance and transparency. Tender processes often attract scrutiny due to high financial stakes. Allegations of pressure or manipulation raise serious institutional questions. Therefore, this case carries implications beyond one incident.
From a ground perspective, the human cost remains central. A family has lost a member under tragic circumstances. The wife’s complaint highlights fear, pressure, and distress. These elements underline the need for a fair and thorough probe.
At present, the investigation continues. Police are expected to examine evidence, including the video and statements. Legal proceedings will determine the course ahead. Meanwhile, political tensions remain high across Punjab.
In conclusion, the case has created a complex mix of legal action and political confrontation. It has drawn attention to accountability in public office. As events unfold, both the investigation and public response will shape the final outcome.
