Gunman targets Farooq Abdullah at wedding event, security teams stop attack
A tense moment unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday evening when a man attempted to attack veteran politician Farooq Abdullah during a wedding ceremony. Security personnel and people present at the venue quickly intervened and stopped the attacker before the situation escalated further.
According to police officials, the incident occurred during a private wedding function where Abdullah attended as a guest. The senior leader currently serves as president of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, the ruling party in the Union Territory. Because of his political stature, security arrangements already existed at the venue.
However, the situation suddenly turned tense during the event. A man later identified as Kamal Singh approached the gathering from behind Abdullah. Soon after, he pulled out a pistol. Witnesses at the venue said the man attempted to fire while standing close to the leader.
Meanwhile, people present nearby immediately noticed the suspicious movement. Security staff and guests reacted quickly. They rushed toward the attacker before he could carry out any further action. As a result, they overpowered him on the spot.
Soon afterward, the crowd restrained the suspect and prevented him from escaping. Videos recorded at the venue showed several people confronting and thrashing the attacker after they caught him. However, security personnel soon took control of the situation and secured the suspect.
Police teams then arrived at the location and took Kamal Singh into custody. Officers began questioning him to understand the motive behind the attack attempt. Investigators also seized the weapon that he carried during the incident.
Importantly, Farooq Abdullah remained safe throughout the episode. Security officials quickly moved him away from the scene to ensure his protection. The event resumed normal activity soon after authorities restored order.
The attempted attack has raised fresh concerns about the security of political leaders during public and private gatherings. Abdullah remains one of the most prominent political figures in Jammu and Kashmir. He has led the National Conference for decades and continues to play a key role in regional politics.
Police authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Officers now aim to determine whether the attacker acted alone or had any support. They also plan to examine his background and possible motives.
For now, swift action by people at the venue and security personnel prevented a potentially serious attack. The quick response ensured that the veteran leader remained unharmed and the suspect landed in police custody within minutes.
