A 23-year-old woman in Odisha died after two men allegedly raped her on the same day and one later pushed her from a four-storey building. Police said the crime took place on February 22 in Jagatsinghpur district. Officers have arrested both accused and filed charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping, rape and murder.

According to investigators, the woman left her home to meet her boyfriend. He had called her to a temple and promised marriage. However, police said he instead took her to a deserted spot. There, he allegedly raped her. After the assault, he left her alone at Rahama bus stand.

The woman waited at the bus stand in distress. She sought help to return home. At that point, a motorcycle rider approached her. Police identified him as a man from Jharkhand who was travelling towards Paradip. He offered help and gained her trust. Soon after, he took her to his rented accommodation in Paradip town.

Police said he then led her to the rooftop of the building. There, he allegedly raped her. After the assault, investigators said he pushed her off the terrace. She fell from the fourth floor and died on the spot. Local residents found her body the next morning.

Meanwhile, the victim’s brother had already alerted authorities. He filed a missing person complaint on the evening of February 22 when she did not return home. Initially, police registered an unnatural death case after they discovered the body on February 23. However, the family later submitted a detailed complaint on February 25. In that complaint, they alleged rape and murder. After that, police intensified the probe and arrested both accused.

Investigators questioned witnesses and examined call records. They traced the movements of the boyfriend and the second accused. Police said both men now face serious criminal charges. Officers continue to gather forensic and digital evidence to strengthen the case.

The incident has triggered sharp political reactions. Naveen Patnaik, president of the Biju Janata Dal and Leader of the Opposition, criticised the state government. He said the crime reflects rising insecurity for women in Odisha. He questioned the gap between official claims and ground reality.

In a public statement, Patnaik asked how many more innocent lives the state would lose. He referred to recent reports of crimes against women in Kanihan in Angul district, Kuchinda in Sambalpur and Paradip. He said these incidents show a worrying trend. He also alleged that weak enforcement encourages offenders.

Furthermore, Patnaik urged the government to act firmly. He called for strict punishment for those responsible. He also demanded stronger awareness campaigns on women’s safety. According to him, authorities must reinforce the rule of law and restore public confidence.

As the investigation moves forward, the case has raised serious concerns about women’s safety in the state. Police continue custodial interrogation of both accused. Meanwhile, political leaders and civil society groups demand accountability and swift justice for the victim.
