From Almora to Antarctica: Kavita Chand summits Mount Vinson, advances 7 summits dream
New Delhi – Kavita Chand has added a rare feat to India’s mountaineering map. On December 12, she reached the summit of Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest peak. She stood at 4,892 metres at 8:30 pm local time. With that climb, she moved closer to the elite Seven Summits goal.
Kavita hails from Almora in Uttarakhand. She now lives in Mumbai. At 40, she balances discipline, endurance, and ambition. Her latest success has drawn praise across the country, especially in her home state.
Importantly, Mount Vinson ranks among the world’s most unforgiving peaks. It rises from one of the most remote regions on Earth. Temperatures plunge far below zero. Winds shift without warning. Access demands complex logistics. Therefore, every step tests planning and resolve.
Kavita began her expedition on December 3. She flew out of India and reached Punta Arenas in Chile on December 4. Next, on December 7, she boarded a flight to Union Glacier. Later that day, she moved to Vinson Base Camp. The camp sits at about 2,100 metres. A ski-equipped aircraft covered the final stretch in roughly 40 minutes. That journey underlined the difficulty of Antarctic travel.
Meanwhile, an experienced team guided the climb. High-altitude expert Mingma David Sherpa led the expedition. Indian mountaineer Bharath Thammineni supported the effort through his company, Boots and Crampon. Together, they coordinated a nine-member Indian team. Careful acclimatisation shaped the strategy. Clear roles ensured smooth execution. As a result, the team reached the top safely.
Earlier, Kavita had climbed Mount Elbrus in Europe. That success marked her first step in the Seven Summits challenge. With Mount Vinson now complete, she has crossed a major milestone. She plans to continue the journey with the same methodical approach.
After the climb, Kavita shared her thoughts. She spoke about carrying the Indian tricolour to the summit. She described the moment as deeply emotional. She also shared a broader message. She wants working professionals to trust long-term goals. According to her, fitness, ambition, and career growth can move together.
Beyond mountaineering, Kavita has built a strong endurance profile. She runs marathons regularly. She has competed in multiple global races. Notably, she won her age category at the Delhi and Mumbai Hyrox 2025 events. She has also completed three races toward the Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Challenge. These achievements reflect consistent training and mental strength.
Previously, Kavita worked in the media industry. In 2024, she made a decisive shift. She stepped away from corporate life to pursue fitness full time. She calls that choice life-changing. Since then, she has focused on structured training, recovery, and performance goals.
At home, she draws steady support. She is married to Deepak Chand Thakur. He serves as CEO and co-founder of NPST. Together, they manage demanding schedules while backing each other’s ambitions.
For Uttarakhand, her climb carries special meaning. The state has produced many mountaineers. Kavita’s success adds a new chapter. It also highlights the growing presence of Indian women in extreme sports.
Looking ahead, Kavita remains focused. She plans her next summits with patience and precision. She continues to train, adapt, and learn. As she moves forward, she carries her roots from Almora to the world’s highest peaks.
