Dilip Kumar’s sisters created turmoil for Saira Banu, prompting hospitalisation and second marriage orchestration
Dilip Kumar, one of Hindi cinema’s first superstars, captured hearts with his charm, looks, and acting prowess. By 1966, he had earned fame and success, making him one of the most eligible men in Bollywood. When he decided to marry Saira Banu that year, the age difference—Dilip at 44 and Saira at 22—raised eyebrows. Initially, the couple anticipated a happy life together, but domestic challenges soon emerged.
Dilip’s large family, including 11 siblings, had grown accustomed to him being the central figure in their lives. His sisters, particularly, exercised control over the household. Dilip anticipated resistance when he brought Saira into this dynamic. He advised Saira that living peacefully with his family would be difficult and planned separate accommodation for them within his bungalow to avoid conflicts.
Dilip documented these challenges in his memoir Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow. He admitted that his sisters had a strong sense of ownership over him. He warned Saira that even the most ideal partner would struggle to gain their acceptance. Consequently, he suggested that he and Saira live in a segregated portion of the house until alternative arrangements could be made for his family. Saira agreed, demonstrating her patience and adaptability.
Despite these measures, Saira encountered a hostile environment. Small daily conflicts—like being denied access to basic amenities—took a toll on her mental and physical health. Eventually, the stress led to ulcerative colitis, prompting her mother to send meals from home for her care. Dilip observed silently, balancing support for his wife while managing his family’s expectations. He later moved into Saira’s residence to shield her from family disputes.
Dilip’s sisters reportedly orchestrated further disruptions. According to his memoir and writer Udaytara Nayar, they introduced Dilip to Asma Rehman in the 1980s, intending to create tension between him and Saira. Dilip married Asma briefly but divorced her once Saira became aware of the situation. This incident was not due to childlessness; Dilip and Saira had lost a son in 1972.
Saira’s maturity and resilience helped preserve the marriage. She maintained decorum with Dilip’s siblings and supported him while navigating a complex family network. Dilip praised her ability to “fall in line” with his guidance and manage the household dynamics without creating conflicts.
Over time, Saira and Dilip built a stable marriage despite the initial turbulence. She reconciled estranged family members and managed public and private challenges with grace. The couple remained together until Dilip Kumar’s passing in 2021. Their relationship exemplified the delicate balance of love, family obligations, and personal resilience in the lives of Bollywood legends.
This chapter in Dilip Kumar’s life underscores how familial influence can shape marital dynamics, and how patience and understanding can help sustain relationships amid adversity.
