IndiGo turmoil puts Ram Mohan Naidu in the national spotlight as he navigates his toughest test yet
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu stands at the centre of an extraordinary aviation crisis. IndiGo’s massive flight cancellations have shaken the sector, and the youngest minister in the Modi government now faces the toughest moment of his career. He told his supporters last year that he felt ready for challenges, and today he confronts one of the biggest challenges Indian aviation has seen in years.
The crisis exploded last week. Thousands of passengers scrambled for alternate flights, and airports across major cities saw rising chaos. Since then, Naidu has held a series of high-level meetings. On Tuesday, he met IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers in Delhi. He asked the airline to stabilise operations quickly and to submit clear plans for restoring reliability. With every passing day, he stays directly involved in monitoring progress, reflecting an unusually hands-on approach.
Even before this crisis, Naidu carried a reputation for seriousness and discipline. He entered politics after his father, K. Yerran Naidu, died in a car crash in 2012. Two years later, he won the Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat at just 27. He has never lost the constituency since. His rise in the TDP remained steady, and party insiders often call him Chandrababu Naidu’s “eyes and ears in Delhi.” They say he gives sharp feedback on policy and strategy and enjoys the CM’s full trust.
His political journey also includes a strong personal narrative. He once switched from a corporate job to a life in public service. He told supporters that the shift felt overwhelming but meaningful. He embraced the opportunity to carry forward his father’s vision. With that focus, he launched the “Politics for Impact” internship, encouraging young people to understand governance and step into public life.
Throughout the past decade, he built a record in Parliament that set him apart from many young MPs. His decision to take paternity leave in 2021 revived the national debate on gender roles. He supported GST-free sanitary pads, spoke openly about menstrual health, and made repeated appeals for better sex education. His direct and assertive speech on the Hyderabad Disha rape case drew praise from across parties, including Sonia Gandhi, and strengthened his image as a strong advocate of women’s rights.
During the pandemic and beyond, he helped navigate several political crises with Chandrababu Naidu. After the CM’s arrest in 2023, he coordinated efforts in Delhi and worked with national leaders to build support. Senior members in the party say he handled the situation with calm precision and played a major role in shaping the TDP’s political strategy during those tense months.
This month, the IndiGo crisis placed him back in the national spotlight. YSRCP leaders demanded his resignation, but he addressed the Rajya Sabha and clarified the cause of the disruption. He said IndiGo’s failure in roster planning created the mess, and he emphasised that no regulatory change triggered the cancellations. His statement shifted attention back to the airline’s internal systems.
Today, as the aviation sector watches his every move, Ram Mohan Naidu faces a major test of leadership. He responds with quick action, clear messaging, and a steady tone—exactly the traits he promised when he accepted the role.
