The film’s wide release marks a major moment for Indian cinema on global OTT platforms.
Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, the film carries international weight. Martin Scorsese and Pravin Khairnar joined the project as executive producers, giving Homebound a unique creative blend of Indian storytelling and global craftsmanship. Co-producers Marijke deSouza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier also contributed to its international appeal.
Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound explores friendship, ambition, and the emotional pressures that shape young India. The film follows Shoaib, played by Ishaan Khatter, and Chandan, played by Vishal Jethwa. Their shared dream of joining the police force drives the narrative. Janhvi Kapoor adds emotional depth as the story shifts through loyalty, duty, and personal struggle.
Neeraj Ghaywan said the film draws inspiration from a true story of friendship. He emphasised that the film speaks to universal human connections and compassion. He added that after being loved at major international festivals, the film’s arrival on Netflix will help it reach audiences in 190 countries.
Producer Karan Johar said Homebound proves why meaningful stories matter. He described it as intimate, layered, and shaped with great care by Ghaywan. He added that its global release on Netflix gives the film a chance to travel beyond boundaries and connect with viewers far outside its original world.
The film has also enjoyed a strong festival journey. It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where critics praised its performances and direction. Later, it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and secured the Second Runner-Up spot for the International Audience Choice Award.
