Bengaluru – Police in Bengaluru South arrested a couple for killing a gig worker during a fit of rage and trying to pass it off as a road accident. The shocking crime took place on the night of October 25 near the Sri Rama Temple area, leaving one man dead and another injured.

Investigators identified the victim as Darshan, a 24-year-old delivery worker. His friend Varun survived with serious injuries. Around 11:30 pm, the duo rode home on a two-wheeler when a speeding car hit them from behind. The impact flung both men onto the road. Darshan died instantly, while Varun sustained multiple fractures.

At first, the JP Nagar Traffic Police treated the crash as a routine accident. Officers registered a case of accidental death and sent the body for post-mortem. However, the truth emerged when police reviewed CCTV footage from nearby shops and street cameras.

The videos revealed a chilling sequence. Moments before the collision, Darshan’s bike accidentally brushed against the car, cracking its side mirror. Enraged, the driver stopped briefly, then reversed and chased the two-wheeler for nearly 200 metres. He accelerated again and rammed it from behind, causing the fatal crash.

According to DCP (South) Lokesh Jagalasur, the footage clearly showed intent. “The accused lost his temper after the mirror broke. He followed the victims and hit them deliberately. This was not an accident,” he said.

Police identified the car’s owner as Manoj Sharma, a physical education teacher at a private school. His wife, Aarti, was in the passenger seat. After the hit, both fled the scene. Later, they returned wearing masks and collected broken car parts to erase evidence.

Police traced the car through registration details and arrested the couple two days later. During questioning, Manoj admitted he lost control of his anger. Investigators seized the vehicle and recovered the damaged bumper and mirror fragments.

Following the findings, the police reclassified the case from accidental death to murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. They also added charges of evidence destruction and criminal conspiracy. The accused couple appeared before a magistrate and were sent to judicial custody.

Locals in the Sri Rama Temple area expressed outrage over the brutal act. Residents said the spot sees heavy evening traffic, and rash driving has become a regular hazard. Many demanded stricter monitoring of road rage cases and better surveillance to ensure safety for delivery workers.

Darshan’s family, who live in JP Nagar, described him as their main breadwinner. His employer confirmed he was returning from a delivery shift when the incident occurred.

The Bengaluru Police continue their probe to establish the exact sequence of events and whether the couple planned the act after the initial scuffle. Authorities said more arrests could follow if evidence points to additional involvement.

With rising cases of road rage violence in major Indian cities, this incident once again highlights how momentary anger can lead to irreversible tragedy.
