Rajiv Gandhi assassination: Nalini Shriran gets parole for 30 days

Chennai, July(HS): Nalini Shriran, who was convicted in the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, got 30 days’ parole. The Madras High Court gave a parole to Nalini Sreehan, who was serving life imprisonment .She has been in prison for over 27 years and is the longest serving woman prisoner.
Earlier this month, the Madras High Court had issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government on a petition filed by Nalini in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in April.
Nalini was sentenced to death in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, but later the Tamil Nadu government changed it on April 24, 2000 to life imprisonment. She claims that the state government has released about 3,700 prisoners who have been sentenced to 10 years or less after the death sentence has been converted into life imprisonment.
The bench of Justice M.M.Suresh and M Nirmal Kumar heard the case. During the hearing, the State Government said that it should be given only a parole of maximum one month at a time. But, Nalini sought a six-month parole for the daughter’s wedding preparations.
She had said that a month would not be enough.Nalini has come out on parole 3 times.Nalini said that she and her husband are locked in jail for 27 years. Her daughter was born in jail too.
