SC refuses urgent hearing to petition on mob lynching
New Delhi, July. 4 (HS): The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to accord an urgent hearing to a petition on mob lynching incidents and said it would hear the matter in due course of time.
The plea for an urgent hearing was made in the highest court before a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
The petition contended that the apex court’s judgment on the issue of mob lynching in July last year had not been complied with.
The Court had then said that “horrendous acts of mobocracy” cannot be allowed to overrun the law of the land and had issued a slew of guidelines to deal with the cases of mob lynching and cow vigilantism.
Earlier, today Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Kerala, Suresh Kodikunnil had given an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha over ”Mob lynching of a suspected cattle-thief in the remote village of Tripura’s Dhalai district”.
It is noteworthy that, on July 2, a 36 year-old man was mercilessly beaten by a mob in Raishyabari, a border village of Tripura’s Dhalai district which is situated close to India-Bangladesh border was caught by local villagers allegedly indulging in cattle-theft died of severe injuries.
