6 killed, 18 missing after Tewari dam breaks in Maharashtra

Mumbai ,July 3 (HS): Several areas including Maharashtra, Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, Ratnagiri are experiencing heavy rains on Wednesday. Due to the overflow of water in Ratnagiri district, the Tiware dam was damaged late night. The 7 villages that have settled near this have been washed away. Six people were killed and 18 are missing . Local administration says that 12 houses near the dam were washed away in water.
The NDRF team has come to rescue. It is said that due to heavy rains, life in Mumbai was badly affected. Due to the rain the financial capital is submerged and 22 people lost their lives in an incident of wall collapse in the city.
Officials said 14 other people died in rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours in remaining Maharashtra. Due to heavy rains since Sunday, rail, air and road traffic in Mumbai is also badly affected. Many trains and planes had to be canceled. The government on Tuesday declared a public holiday declaring people not to come out of the house.
The rains in Mumbai have been continuing for the last 6 days. The Mumbai Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain warning today.  About 15 inches of rain was recorded in five hours on Tuesday night, that means an average of 3 inches of rain every hour.
Due to the rains, the Mumbai airport was also closed. 203 flights canceled and 55 were diverted. 44 trains had to be canceled too. The government has declared a two-day holiday in Mumbai . NDRF and Navy have also been deployed in rescue work.
