Rajkummar Rao to star as Sourav Ganguly in biopic, confirms former skipper

Sourav Ganguly confirmed that Rajkummar Rao will play him in his upcoming biopic. Speaking to the media in Bardhaman, West Bengal, on Thursday, Ganguly said, “From what I’ve heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role… but there are issues of dates. So, it will take more than a year to hit the screens.”
Ganguly, one of India’s most successful captains, played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs. He amassed 18,575 international runs and later served as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president. In October last year, he took over as the BCCI president.
Known as the ‘Prince of Kolkata,’ Ganguly led India to 21 Test victories and guided the team to the 2003 World Cup final. He also contributed to cricket administration, working with legends Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman on the BCCI’s technical and Cricket Advisory Committees. After retiring in 2008, he left behind a legacy of over 18,000 international runs.
Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao stays busy with multiple projects. His upcoming film, Bhool Chuk Maaf, also stars Wamiqa Gabbi. The recently released teaser shows their wedding preparations taking a bizarre turn. During the Haldi ceremony, Rajkummar’s character experiences a time loop, reliving the same day repeatedly. The teaser, featuring Chor Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal (2009), adds nostalgia, as Wamiqa Gabbi had a minor role in that film.
Directed by Karan Sharma, Bhool Chuk Maaf is backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. Besides this, Rao will also star in Maalik, produced by Kumar Taurani’s Tips Films and Jay Shewakramani’s Northern Lights Films. The film is set for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
