ICC blasted for empty stadiums, urged to move Champions Trophy fully to Pakistan

India started its Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a dominant six-wicket win over Bangladesh. However, the match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium saw empty stands despite India’s massive fan following. The low turnout sparked debates about the future of ODI cricket.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat. His decision backfired as he and Soumya Sarkar departed for ducks in the first two overs. India’s bowlers dominated early, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5. Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel kept the pressure high. Patel almost claimed a hat-trick, but Rohit Sharma dropped Jaker Ali’s edge.
While India controlled the game, the empty stadium became the main talking point. A sparse crowd at an India match shocked many and raised concerns about the Champions Trophy’s relevance. Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand in Karachi also suffered from poor attendance. Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized the lack of fan interest.
Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi fueled the discussion, questioning ODI cricket’s appeal. “Watching the ICC Champions Trophy match between India and Bangladesh. Stands are empty. That wouldn’t happen at an IPL game. Is ODI cricket losing relevance? Should we replace it with more Test cricket?” he posted on X.
Despite the controversy, India dominated on the field. Mohammed Shami marked his return to ICC tournaments with a brilliant 5/53, restricting Bangladesh to 228. Shubman Gill then anchored India’s chase with a composed century. His unbeaten 101 off 129 balls guided India to victory with six wickets in hand and 21 balls to spare.
The debate over ODI cricket’s future continues, but India’s strong start in the Champions Trophy sends a clear message to its rivals.
