At the BAFTA Awards on Sunday, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish musical Emilia Pérez won Best Film Not in the English Language. This win marked a second upset for India’s All We Imagine As Light after its Golden Globe loss to Emilia Pérez last month. Despite the controversy surrounding lead actor Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive past tweets, the film triumphed.

Gascón, embroiled in a social media storm since last month, did not attend the awards. Audiard acknowledged her in his acceptance speech, sending her a kiss. He thanked the team, highlighting the dedication of everyone involved in the film’s creation.

Meanwhile, All We Imagine As Light missed out on the award, but its recognition continues to grow. The film, directed by Payal Kapadia, has made waves in international cinema. It had already earned praise for its evocative storytelling and strong performances from Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. The film follows a troubled nurse and her young roommate as they navigate their desires during a beach town getaway.

In 2024, All We Imagine As Light made history by winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Indian film to do so. As an official Indo-French co-production, it marked a significant achievement in global cinema. Its inclusion in the Critics Choice Awards further solidified its international acclaim.
