Trump softens trade stance during bilateral meet with Modi
New Delhi, Jun. 28 (HS) : A day after urging India to withdraw the ‘unacceptable tariffs’ charged on American goods, United States President Donald Trump on Friday softened his stance relating to trade relations with India and agreed to resolve the recurring trade issues through talks during the bilateral meeting held between the two countries on the sidelines of the G-20 (Group of Twenty) summit in Osaka, Japan.
On Thursday, President Trump had issued a warning to India to withdraw the recently imposed unreasonable and high trade tariffs by India against the United States.
However, earlier today, during the bilateral meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, both the leaders agreed to taking requisite measures to resolve the trade disputes between the two nations.
After the Trump-Modi meeting, India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale issued a statement and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi specifically pointed out that India had already taken a retaliatory action after the US had revoked the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) status for India.
India acknowledged taking the necessary action happened in the past and was willing to move forward on finding ways to resolving the trade related issues together among the two nations.
During the bilateral meeting with India, Trump said that he assured maintaining closer diplomatic relations between India and US and said that both the countries were closer to each other like never before.
He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his resounding electoral victory in the recent national polls and appreciated his strong leadership in leading the world’s largest democracy.
Trump said both India-US relations would be strengthened further including military cooperation.
On trade relations with India, Trump said,”We will be doing great with India. India is doing good. Everybody wants to be a part of America’s economy.”
Trump praised Modi for winning a historic electoral mandate by the citizens of India and said he deserved the masive mandate.
In addition, to the India-US bilateral meeting, US-India-Japan on Thursday held a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Japan.
