The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has improved socio-economic security for women, children, and the elderly. It enforces clear guidelines, reducing court cases and strengthening marriage as an institution.

Marriage registration is now mandatory. This prevents fraudulent second marriages, which often happened without the first wife’s knowledge. It also stops underage girls from being secretly married, allowing them to continue their education without fear.

Under the UCC, a deceased person’s property will be equally shared among their wife, children, and parents. This ensures elderly parents receive rightful protection and support.

The law grants property rights to children born in live-in relationships, just like those from a legal marriage. This brings accountability to such relationships and secures the future of these children.

The Indian Constitution allows adults to choose their life partners. While the Special Marriage Act already seeks objections before marriage, the UCC introduces a provision where, in some cases, parents will be informed. Uttarakhand also enforces strict laws to prevent forced conversions, tackling issues like love jihad.

Vice Chancellor of Doon University and UCC expert committee member Prof. Surekha Dangwal emphasized that the law promotes equality and eliminates gender-based discrimination. With its implementation, Uttarakhand moves toward a more just and secure society.
