The US has postponed tariffs on Canada for 30 days after both nations agreed to boost border security. Two days ago, President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada and 10% on China. However, after discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, he decided to delay tariffs on Mexico as well. Tariffs on China remain in effect.
Trump stated that Canada took steps to prevent illegal drugs like fentanyl from entering the US. In response, he agreed to postpone tariffs. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to form a special investigation team to stop fentanyl smuggling. During a phone call with Trump, Trudeau pledged 1.3 billion Canadian dollars to strengthen border security.
Trudeau later confirmed this on Instagram, saying he committed to enhanced security, leading Trump to delay the tariff decision. Trump also confirmed the agreement on Truth Social, stating Canada had assured safety at the northern border.
On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Trump had postponed tariffs on Mexico after their talks. Sheinbaum stated that Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guards to curb drug smuggling. She also emphasized that both nations will continue discussions on security and trade while tariffs remain on hold for a month.
The postponement gives Canada and Mexico time to reinforce border measures. Talks between the US, Mexico, and Canada will continue as they work toward long-term solutions on trade and security.
