Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Uttarakhand for becoming the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), calling it a step towards strengthening democracy. He linked the UCC to the spirit of sports, highlighting that it promotes unity without discrimination.

During his speech at the inauguration of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, the Prime Minister emphasized that the National Games are more than just a sporting event. They celebrate India’s diversity and unity under the “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” initiative. He also noted that this year’s games include many indigenous sports and have an environmentally conscious “Green Games” approach.

Modi reflected on the importance of sports in the country’s development, saying that when India excels in sports, its global standing grows. Over the past decade, the government has prioritized nurturing athletic talent. The sports budget has tripled, and significant investments are made through programs like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Under this initiative, athletes receive financial support to prepare for international competitions.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the development of state-of-the-art sports infrastructure across India, as part of the Khelo India program. Many new tournaments have been introduced, giving young players the chance to grow and shine. The Khelo India Youth Games and University Games provide opportunities for budding athletes, while the Khelo India Para Games have showcased the impressive performances of para-athletes.

Modi reiterated India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, stating that the event would raise Indian sports to new heights. He also highlighted the broader benefits of hosting the Olympics, including development across multiple sectors. To nurture talent at the grassroots level, BJP MPs are organizing sports competitions in their constituencies. The Prime Minister shared an example from his constituency, Kashi, where about 250,000 youth participate annually in MP sports competitions.

Through these initiatives, Modi underscored India’s commitment to fostering sports and talent at every level, from local competitions to international events like the Olympics.
