On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department confirmed that Donald Trump’s team played a key role in finalizing the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal. The truce aims to pause the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which erupted on October 7, 2023, and has caused immense destruction and loss of life.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the importance of bipartisan collaboration in reaching the agreement. He noted Trump’s team’s involvement as “absolutely critical,” especially since the current administration’s term ends in five days. He emphasized the necessity of rising above partisan divides to achieve national and global goals.

“When Americans work across party lines for the national interest, much can be achieved,” Miller said, expressing gratitude for Trump’s cooperation in the deal.

The ceasefire, mediated by international parties, unfolds in three phases. It promises:

  1. The release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners detained in Israel.
  2. Humanitarian aid access to Gaza, enabling displaced families to return to damaged homes.
  3. An initial six-week halt to hostilities, with negotiations for a long-term truce.

The deal also aims to address Gaza’s extensive war damage, paving the way for reconstruction after 15 months of devastating conflict.

In the first phase, 33 hostages will reunite with their families. However, it remains unclear whether all captives are alive. Meanwhile, thousands of displaced Palestinians await clarity on when they can safely return to their homes.

Future phases include the release of remaining hostages and potential Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. The agreement also outlines plans for Gaza’s long-term reconstruction, though achieving these goals faces significant challenges.

President Joe Biden hailed the deal as a result of months of intensive American diplomacy. He credited his administration and Trump’s team for working together, describing their collaboration as speaking “with one voice.” Biden stressed the importance of keeping both sides at the negotiating table to secure a lasting truce.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the agreement’s progress but indicated that final details are still under review. Netanyahu thanked Trump and Biden for their roles in advancing the ceasefire while emphasizing that the Israeli Cabinet must approve the deal after reviewing the finalized terms.

The ceasefire offers hope for easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and resolving the deadliest Israel-Hamas conflict in recent history. However, uncertainties remain about prisoner exchanges, displaced families’ return, and achieving lasting peace. As negotiations continue, bipartisan cooperation underscores the potential for impactful diplomacy.
