Israel and Hamas near a breakthrough in truce negotiations, with Hamas expected to release 33 hostages in the first phase of the agreement. Talks in Doha, mediated by Qatar, included Israeli intelligence chiefs and the Qatari prime minister. Israel confirmed its readiness to implement the ceasefire once the deal is signed.

U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized Washington’s efforts to finalize the deal, highlighting goals to secure hostages’ release, halt violence, and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. “Palestinians have endured immense suffering,” Biden noted, urging swift action.

President-elect Donald Trump expressed optimism, predicting the agreement could be finalized by week’s end. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan echoed similar sentiments, stating that pressure on Hamas to agree has increased. A final round of discussions was scheduled in Doha to address outstanding issues.

Palestinian representative Qadura Fares joined the talks to advise on detainee releases. The initial phase of the agreement would include further negotiations 16 days into the ceasefire, aiming to end hostilities completely.

Key Terms of the Proposed Peace Deal

The agreement includes:

  1. Hostage Release: Hamas will release 33 hostages and return mortal remains of the deceased.
  2. Ceasefire Duration: The initial truce will last 42 days.
  3. Territorial Arrangements: Israel will maintain control of the Philadelphi Corridor and establish a buffer zone along Gaza’s border.
  4. Prisoner Relocation: Palestinian detainees linked to killings will not return to the West Bank but may go to Gaza or abroad.

Residents in northern Gaza will regain access to their homes under unspecified Israeli security measures.

Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killed 1,200 people and resulted in 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched military operations, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting over 46,500 Palestinian deaths since. The U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have mediated talks for over a year to achieve peace.

This tentative deal signals a potential turning point in the conflict, offering hope for resolution amid ongoing devastation.
