ISRO’s ambitious Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) is making strides after overcoming delays. On Sunday, ISRO successfully moved two satellites—SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target)—from 15 meters to just 3 meters apart in a trial attempt. After completing this critical maneuver, the spacecraft were safely repositioned to their original distance for further analysis.

The SpaDeX mission aims to demonstrate in-space docking, a complex process vital for future deep-space exploration. If successful, India will join the US, Russia, and China in mastering this critical capability.

Trials and Progress

On Saturday, ISRO shared updates showing the two satellites inching closer to what it called an “exciting handshake.” At 15 meters apart, both satellites captured stunning images and videos of each other, showcasing their precision positioning.

Sunday’s trial brings ISRO closer to its goal, but the docking decision will follow a detailed analysis of the trial data. “We’ve reached 3 meters. The next step depends on further evaluation,” ISRO stated.

Challenges and Delays

SpaDeX faced two delays earlier this month. The first attempt, originally scheduled for January 7, was postponed due to excess drift between the satellites. ISRO rescheduled it for January 9, but another issue forced further postponement.

“While maneuvering to a 225-meter separation, unexpected drift arose after the non-visibility period,” ISRO explained on January 8. This setback required recalibration to ensure safety and precision for subsequent trials.

Mission Significance

Launched on December 30 aboard a PSLV-C60 rocket, SpaDeX is a key step toward India’s future space ambitions. The satellites, each weighing 220 kilograms, were deployed in a 475-kilometer circular orbit.

In-space docking technology is crucial for projects like the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and lunar astronaut missions. Success with SpaDeX would cement India’s place as a global leader in space technology.

The trial’s success highlights ISRO’s commitment to overcoming challenges. With data analysis underway, the next steps for docking will mark a milestone in India’s space journey.
