AAP-BJP spar over ‘Sheeshmahal’ drama at Delhi CM’s residence
Tensions erupted outside Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence today as AAP leaders clashed with police over BJP’s allegations of luxury renovations at the Civil Lines bungalow. The BJP accused Kejriwal of misusing public funds for extravagant upgrades during the pandemic, dubbing the residence “Sheeshmahal.”
AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj attempted to enter the bungalow with media to debunk BJP’s claims of a “golden toilet, swimming pool, and minibar.” Police blocked their entry, citing law and order concerns. Singh called the action a breach of privilege for an MP and cabinet minister.
“Why stop us? BJP spreads lies—let media verify. If their claims are true, open the residence now,” Singh challenged. Bharadwaj questioned whose authority police followed, saying, “BJP’s lies stand exposed. Are we terrorists? Why the water cannons and heavy police presence?”
When denied access, AAP leaders shifted their focus to the PM’s residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, accusing BJP of hypocrisy. Police stopped them again. Singh urged a comparison, noting the PM’s residence renovations cost ₹2,700 crore.
PM Narendra Modi criticized Kejriwal, alleging negligence during the pandemic. “Delhi residents searched for oxygen while AAP prioritized building Sheeshmahal,” Modi stated. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi added, “AAP’s actions align with its anarchic tendencies. Their attempts won’t hide the museum of opulence Kejriwal created.”
Singh demanded public tours of both the CM and PM residences to dispel misinformation. “BJP must explain how ₹52 crore on Kejriwal’s bungalow differs from the PM’s palace,” Singh argued.
The confrontation reflects growing tension as both parties vie for Delhi’s political narrative ahead of elections.
