Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a new legislation to tackle the growing urban Naxalite threat. The Maharashtra Special Public Safety Bill 2024 aims to dismantle the Naxalite network and strengthen efforts against Naxalism. The bill will be sent to a select committee for further discussions and is expected to be finalized during the Monsoon Session of the State Legislature.

During the Legislature’s winter session in Nagpur, Fadnavis highlighted that the Naxalite threat is no longer limited to remote areas. It has expanded to urban regions, supported by various groups. These groups often assist Naxalites in escaping from jails and providing them shelter. This has led to a loss of trust in the Indian Constitution and the judicial system, according to Fadnavis.

The proposed legislation aims to address this growing challenge. It seeks to eliminate Naxalite threats in both rural and urban areas while ensuring the safety and security of the public.
