17-year-old suspect in Wisconsin school shooting leaves 2 dead, 6 injured
A 17-year-old girl opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, December 16, killing two and injuring six. Police confirmed that the victims included a teen student and a teacher, while two others sustained life-threatening injuries. The attack happened just before 11 a.m. at the K-12 school, which has around 400 students.
Police Respond Swiftly
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said officers arrived within three minutes of receiving a 911 call. “The shooting was confined to one area, but we’re still determining if it was a classroom or hallway,” he added. Police did not fire their weapons during the response, and the suspect’s family is cooperating with investigators.
Motive Remains Unknown
Chief Barnes stated there were no prior warnings or law enforcement contact with the shooter. “We don’t know why this happened or the suspect’s motivation,” he said, emphasizing that the community will need time to heal.
Victims and Aftermath
Among the injured were three students and a teacher, with two already discharged from the hospital. Chief Barnes mentioned that all injuries occurred within the same age group, likely teens and their teachers.
Community Reeling
Parents reunited with their children after the tragedy. School official Barbara Wiers described the shooting as a devastating blow to the school community. She noted that while the school lacks metal detectors or a resource officer, it does implement visual scanning as a security measure.
Chief Barnes called the incident a “sad day for Madison and our country,” underscoring the long-lasting impact of such violence. Authorities continue investigating the motive while offering support to victims and their families.
