India and China will hold high-level talks in Beijing on December 18, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The meeting will involve Special Representatives from both sides and focus on resolving the border standoff in eastern Ladakh. These talks mark another attempt to ease tensions after previous meetings yielded limited progress.
The discussions will be part of the ongoing framework established under the 2003 mechanism for resolving border issues. India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, are expected to lead the talks. These leaders have been instrumental in shaping dialogue over the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Background to the Standoff
The border dispute escalated in May 2020 when Chinese troops advanced into disputed areas along the LAC in eastern Ladakh.
