The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Conrad Sangma, withdrew its support from Manipur’s BJP-led government, citing Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s mishandling of the state’s escalating ethnic violence. Despite the withdrawal of its seven MLAs, the BJP still holds a strong majority in the Assembly.

In a letter to BJP President JP Nadda, Sangma condemned the government’s failure to restore normalcy, citing innocent lives lost and communities suffering. This move reveals deepening tensions within the ruling coalition.

Violence in Manipur intensified over the weekend with the discovery of two Meitei bodies in Assam’s Barak River, fueling protests in the valley. Angry mobs vandalized or torched over 13 lawmakers’ residences, including those of BJP leaders. Protests have turned violent as people demand accountability from the government.

Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh criticized both the state and central governments for failing to restore order. He demanded central intervention and warned of mass resignations if no action is taken. Singh described the ongoing violence, especially against women and children, as unprecedented.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) called for extending the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) across all valley districts and criticized the selective enforcement of security measures. They also accused armed militants of exacerbating unrest and highlighted the looting of state armouries, which armed civilians with firearms.

To curb the violence, authorities imposed a statewide curfew, suspended internet services, and arrested 23 individuals involved in attacks on political leaders. Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, are conducting operations to restore order. The BJP-led government, though under scrutiny, is committed to addressing the crisis, with Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak assuring the public of their resolve.
