West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday demanded a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. This request came after Sanjay Roy, the main accused, claimed he was framed by former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Roy alleged Goyal conspired to implicate him in the crime.

The Raj Bhavan Media Cell issued a statement on X, confirming the governor’s demand for a prompt update on the allegations. In the post, Raj Bhavan highlighted, “RG Kar rape and murder: Revelations against Vineet Goyal, former Police Commissioner. Governor requests immediate report from CM Mamata Banerjee.”

The statement emphasized that recent media reports on November 12 stirred public concern. After a hearing at Sealdah Court on November 11, Roy claimed to reporters that senior police officials, including Goyal, framed him. He shouted to reporters, alleging, “It was Vineet Goyal who conspired the whole thing and framed me.” Roy further claimed he faced threats from “other senior officers” involved.

The case revolves around the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Her body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall, and an autopsy confirmed both rape and murder. Soon after, Roy, a civic police volunteer, was arrested as the prime suspect. Sealdah Court formally charged him nearly two months later.

As the case progresses, Governor Bose has insisted the state government clarify its stance on Roy’s allegations and provide details on any investigation into police misconduct. This high-profile case has raised serious concerns about the role of police and the handling of the investigation. Governor Bose’s intervention underscores the need for a transparent inquiry to maintain public confidence.

The allegations against a former senior police official add another layer of complexity to an already troubling case, demanding quick and thorough responses from the state government.
